To start his 1972 campaign, a group of Nixon’s most trusted aides created an "enemies list" of political opponents to the Nixon administration. The IRS and FBI investigated the people on the list as posing a threat to national security.
On June 27, 1973, John Dean told the Watergate committee about the enemies list. It consisted of hundreds of potential political opponents, the media, businessmen, intellectuals, actors, organizations and others who Nixon felt were “out to get him.”
