BROADWAY’S MOST INNOVATIVE MUSICAL COMES TO CLEVELAND

Movin’ Out, the Tony Award®-winning new musical conceived, choreographed and directed by Twyla Tharp and based on classic songs by Billy Joel, opens in Cleveland for a two-week engagement at Playhouse Square Center February 8-20, 2005 as part of the McDonald Financial Group Broadway Series presented by Xerox.

This engagement of Visa presents Movin’ Out will mark the Ohio premiere of the show that critics say revolutionized musical theater as we know it. Told through the choreography of Twyla Tharp and more than two dozen of Billy Joel’s hit songs, Visa presents Movin’ Out is the story of lifelong friends through two turbulent decades that change them and the world around them forever. The songs all come together to weave a musical backdrop which beautifully compliments Tharp’s innovative choreography. The songs and dance take audiences through a poignant narrative comprised of three main elements: post-World War II idealism, the Vietnam War and its subsequent unrest, and finally, survival.

Many will recognize Visa presents Movin’ Out’s main characters, as they come straight from Joel’s lyrics. There are Brenda and Eddie from “Scenes From an Italian Restaurant,” Tony and Sergeant O’Leary from “Movin’ Out,” Judy from “Why, Judy, Why,” and James from “James”-and their story is told completely through dance, with no dialogue whatsoever. Visa presents Movin’ Out is “a story told without language,” Tharp says. “The movement and the action tell the story- the experience, the emotional resonance, comes from action rather than language.”

FYI

Theater aficionados might recognize one (or more) of the cast members in Visa presents Movin’ Out. Holly Cruikshank, an audience favorite as “the girl in the yellow dress” from Contact, will perform on Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday evening during the first week of the show’s Cleveland engagement. During the second week, she will perform Tuesday and Thursday evening and at the Saturday and Sunday matinees. Cleveland area native Michael Cavanaugh returns to his hometown to perform during the two-week run on Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday evenings and Sunday matinees. How lucky we are to see these two critically acclaimed artists light up the Palace Theatre stage!

Act II
The vets try to cobble their lives back together. Tony can’t seem to find a way to reconnect with Brenda, while Eddie can’t connect with anyone. Spiraling into a lonely existence of drugs and self-loathing, Eddie takes a tour through a nightmare of his past, projecting Judy as his guide. By chance, he encounters Judy jogging in the park, and her forgiveness allows him to finally set his life back on track. Brenda and Tony rediscover the love needed to heal their wounds. The friends reunite to discover they have all found their way back home.
