A Choreographer’s Impression
Oklahoma! is one of the most recognizable musicals
ever created for the stage. Aside from giving Rodgers
& Hammerstein their first collaborative smash hit,
it made a star out of then-unknown choreographer Agnes
de Mille, who went on to choreograph numerous ballets
and musicals. She has been named one of America’s
“Irreplaceable Dance Treasures.” Later, Susan
Stroman choreographed Oklahoma! for the Royal
National Theatre production of the show. She is well known
for her work with the New York City Ballet and the Martha
Graham Dance Company. She has emerged as one of the leading
Broadway choreographers, creating such shows as The
Producers the new Mel Brooks musical, Contact, Show Boat,
Big and The Music Man.
